Grief Support Groups Portland, OR

Grief can feel isolating even when surrounded by others.

Grief support groups offer a space to be witnessed by people who understand the weight of loss. I facilitate grief support groups in Portland, OR for adults navigating the death of a loved one and seeking connection in community.

You do not have to carry your grief alone.

What Is a Grief Support Group?

A grief support group is a small, therapist-led gathering where individuals share and process their experiences of loss in a confidential, compassionate setting.

Unlike individual therapy, group work allows you to:

  • Hear others’ stories

  • Recognize shared experiences

  • Reduce feelings of isolation

  • Explore grief in relationship with others

  • Develop new language for your loss

Groups are intentionally structured and professionally facilitated to create emotional safety and meaningful dialogue.

Who Grief Groups Are For

These Portland grief support groups are for adults who are:

  • Mourning the death of a partner, parent, sibling, or close loved one

  • Experiencing sudden or traumatic loss

  • Navigating prolonged or complicated grief

  • Seeking connection beyond one-on-one therapy

  • Wanting to feel less alone in their experience

You do not need to be “ready” or have the right words. Showing up is enough.

What to Expect in Group Sessions

Grief support groups meet in person at my NW Portland office:

2066 NW Irving St, Suite 4
Portland, OR 97209

Each group includes:

  • A consistent small group of participants

  • Structured themes or prompts

  • Space for open sharing

  • Professional facilitation

  • Respectful boundaries and confidentiality

Some individuals participate in group work alongside individual grief counseling, while others find group support to be a powerful standalone experience.

Benefits of Grief Support in Community

While grief is deeply personal, it is not meant to be carried in isolation.

Many participants find that group work:

  • Reduces shame or self-judgment

  • Helps normalize complex emotions

  • Encourages meaning-making

  • Strengthens resilience

  • Creates lasting connections

Grief changes us. Being witnessed in that change matters.

  • How is a grief support group different from individual therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on one-on-one exploration, while grief support groups provide shared space to process loss with others who are also grieving. Both can be valuable and complementary.

Do I have to share in a grief support group?

Participation is encouraged but never forced. Many people begin by listening and sharing when they feel ready.

How long do grief support groups last?

Group length varies. Some groups run for a set number of weeks, while others may be ongoing. Details are discussed during the consultation process.

    Are grief support groups confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality and respectful boundaries are foundational to creating a safe and supportive environment.

Grief Support Groups

In our grief, we often need to connect with other people who are grieving too. I offer support groups for the bereaved where we will build connections with one another and use creative writing and photography as healing tools. Empty Nesting Grief and Transitions

Empty nesting brings its own experiences of grief and challenge. This transition in mothering changes our relationships with our children and ourselves. Many empty nesters ask themselves, 'Now What?!' at this juncture in their lives. We can feel lost and adrift about our purpose. Join us for a small group experience where we will explore the ways empty nesting offers us opportunities to reconnect with ourselves.

Parted Too Soon (widows under age 60)

The loss of a beloved spouse at any age is devastating. Losing your person when you are young brings countless challenges and unique forms of grief. Join us to be in community with other like-hearted grievers who are walking this path of young widowhood. We will explore themes such as caring for grieving children, the financial impacts after the loss of your spouse, and the spiritual and emotional processes of grief.

Mourning Walks in Nature

Join us for guided nature walks, where we will experience the healing power of nature and the gifts of connection to others as we walk through grief alongside you.

Therapists Who Write

Join us for a monthly writing session. Each session will be two hours. 90 minutes will be dedicated to writing, with an additional 30 minutes to check in and share how our writing process is going.
